Baubles!

by TJMum @ 2007-12-08 - 16:40:58

As this is a site looking at green issues (and this is something I'm glad to say we are doing at 'messy play' with my son next week), why not try reusing some of those cardboard items and have fun with your kids/grandchildren at the same time.

How about taking some old egg boxes, glitter, glue and tinsel to hang and make tree decorations? Or toilet roll tubes and cotton wool to make snowmen? There is no limit to what you can do and not only will you be reusing, you will also have some hand made memories to keep and bring out every Christmas.

My mum (God rest) kept all the things we made in play school and faithfully trotted them out each year - much to the embarrassment of my brother. However, when we were all in our twenties) she decided to give them a rest one year, but my big, strapping, police officer brother demanded to know where his snow man and three wise men had gone! Needless to say the next year they came out, tattered and a little worse for wear, but pride of place in the window again.

Have some fun, use your imagination and get the kids involved. The weather is ideal for indoor pursuits too!!

Blue Peter has nothing on our household! Yes, I've got my Nan's old glass baubles - every year I hold my breath to see if another has broken in storage but so far they are surviving. Ah, they don't make things like they used to.....!

You evoked some memories for me. We did all sorts of paper work with newspapers, if there were spare papers around, paper chains being the main thing. The tree would have the same tinsel re-used year after year. We also had the continental habit of lighting birthday cake size candles on Christmas Eve and singing all verses of Silent Night while the candles flickered away in the darkened room. Our voices were re-used every year too with song. The boys made things at school and what was made was put either on the tree or on a mantle.

My daughter made lots of things and for years her little characters dangled from our tree. I still have them, but I don't decorate a tree anymore.

Is that for any particular reason? We made snowmen at messy play today and my son proudly showed his dad his creation (it only had a little help from his mum!). That will be one I'll bring out every year!

"Is that for any particular reason? "

Hi,

I am not sure what your question relates to. Can you help? :)

Sorry, should have made myself clearer :). I meant is there any reason you don't decorate a tree now?

Yup; I gave up on real trees years ago; I've had a couple of man-made ones; one was singularly short lived because of base stand problems and sprung branches that didn't, and the other is a nice one; it is a performance to hike into the house from the cellar and it sheds like a real one!
