Who killed Father Christmas?

by TJMum @ 2007-12-21 - 20:38:34

Ok, so now I'm a mum I'm taking a bit more notice of children orientated things and to my horror I find we've been 'Americanised'! Father Christmas no longer exsists to kids; now it's Santa on absolutely everything. How I hate that! And then I looked a little closer; when did schools start having proms? Why has halloween been hijacked into a trick or treat fest? Why are our children emulating their cross Atlantic cousins and just shoving our culture under the carpet?

Britain is very multicultural and we absorb so much of other peoples ideas, and whilst this isn't a bad thing it is sad that at the same time we seem to lose a little of our background snd heritage. In my household Father Christmas is still quite alive and I am teaching him to the boys - if we can hold off Santa for another couple of years I will be happy!!

This Americanisation is insidious and should be resisted!
I hope that you have an enjoyable, and relaxing, time over the festive period.

I sincerely hope that you are successful in holding back all that you can TJM, but the day will come when you can't, every generation changes and I've seen enough to know. Not every thing is bad, the trick is to pick out the good things, and that is also the hard bit.

You and yours, have a lovely Christmas.

Do you eat McDonalds? Do you go to Tesco? Do you watch soap operas? If you don't you are resisting the Americanisation of UK and the rest of the world. If you do, then you are guilty, just like the rest of us, of seeking the easy, quick and measurable rewards. This is what Americanisation is all about.

McDonalds? Not on your life - I value my children's health too much. Tescos? On very rare occasions when I'm forced to go - otherwise I try to shop locally. Soap operas? Boring, boring, boring. Would rather read a good book. No, not all Americanisation is bad, or any other culture either. But replacing our values with others purely because of commercialisation is not something I want for my family.

So you are one of those exceptional people that slow the Americanisation of the world. There are so many who hate Americanisation and love McDonalds. I believe that you have to choose, as you can’t get one without the other.

I wouldn't say exceptional, I just want to give my boys a chance to see another side of things. They weren't all bad when I was little. I like films and TV, and music, I just feel that perhaps Americanisation of all things is a little too much if we want to retain any identity we had. After all, there must have been something about the UK that bought you here, or do you dislike the British and their way of life too?

I completely agree. My fighting with americanisation is not having a TV at home. It's not perfect, but it's much better than the alternative.

I just wanted to say, that not everybody has a chance to go to a local store... All local stores in my city were bought by bigger corporations...

And that, of course, is one of our country's major problems. But unfortunately it is us, the consumer, who have asked for this, for bigger stalls, more items at lower prices and exotic foods.

As much as I can I try to use direct buying from farmers. There are quite a few small sites that are still independent. Naturally when they become successful they will be taken over too :(

This is all too true. However, if we stop shopping at these places because of that fear then they will shut down even quicker. In this world of fast living none of us look at the consequences of our actions - until it's too late.

so what would be your recommendation?

That's a difficult one. What I would like to see happen and what can feasibly happen are two different things. I try to shop locally, but even then I am forced to go for some items to the local supermarket. I try to buy British goods, and fruit and veg that are in season, but this is not always possible as some items are not supplied. Why in ASDA could I get half a cucumber from the UK, but if I wanted a whols one it had to come from Spain?! I would love to see a reduction of cars and trucks on our roads, but this wont happen unless there is a major shake up in the public transport system. I try to do my bit to keep my family healthy and give them a chance at seeing what this planet has, before mankind wipes out animal and plant life for good.

When ideology takes precedence over personal comfort than it will happen. At the moment we are still very far from it

Unfotunately I can't see it happening. When politicians in this country are quick to award themselves a 10% pay rise, yet baulk at letting others keep up with inflation there is not much hope for the rest of us!

I totally agree lets start a keep Britain british campaign, and that isn`t meant in a racist way, why not have our values like other countries have theres and be proud of them instead of trying to accomodate everyone else. At the rate of political correctness we will have nothing left ;)

Thanks to everyone who wrote on this post. I'm afraid as a nation we're just so scared of offending anyone else we just roll over and let them walk all over us! Oh well, my water is off because of the frost so I'm now going to sit by the fire and think of all the washing I can't do! Have a really great Christmas everyone, and as my family comes first I'll see you all in the New Year!
